Book Report Wrap-Up

Last week, each member of the class delivered an oral presentation and a written report on a book.  A wide variety of books, from classics to short stories to modern movies were discussed.  Let's wrap up this project by posting our book recommendations.  In the future, when you are looking for a good book to read, you can check your classmates' recommendations.

In your comment, please tell us the title of your book, the genre, whether you recommend the book or not and why.  Happy reading!

I'm Shoko. I really recommend "Misery",because it was so crazy and exciting story. Maybe you can read at a stretch, but the person who hate cruel description shouldn't read it!!

I recomend "Heat and Dust". This historical novel describes two English women and their lives in India. You can enjoy their love stories and learn Indian culture.

This book's setting is very interesting because of its division into two parts:the narrator's diary and Olivia's own point of view.

I recommend you to read "Misery" , kind of mystery. Maybe, you will be shocked because there are some cruelty.
But if you want a thrill, it's suitable.

I read `East of Eden.' This story was irony. It showed `not to be loved by anybody is despair.' You will feel diverse emotions from it.

I recommend you to read "I ROBBOT" ,kind of sceince fiction.
It will give you a very unforgattable vision of the world with robbots. It will also give you a chance to think about the future.

Hello friends in Japan, this is Berta, a Venezuelan EFL teacher on sabbatical in Toronto where I will be until the end of June.
Congratulations on this successful blog where you recommend books you have read to others. I particularly like the work of Jane Austen, like Haruka. Most of her six novels have already been in films such as Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and Emma. Her work is impressive taking into account she was a single woman in the 18th century with little money.
Thanks to all for sharing your recommendations.
Cheers, Berta

Hi everyone! I'm Sel E. from Canada (living in Nagoya). I highly recommend "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" by Mark Haddon. This book was written for children, so it's short and easy to read.
The hero of the book is autistic, meaning, he has trouble thinking clearly. He tries very hard and learns to face his fears. He has a true "gambaro!" spirit.
Please look for it at the bookstore!

Thanks to everyone who left a comment about their book report.

Also, we heard book recommendations from guests, Berta and Sel! Now, I would like to tell you about the book that I have just started reading.

It is called "Gentleman and Players" by Joanne Harris. It is set at a private boys high school where two of the main characters are teachers. Something tragic is going to happen, I think, but I'm going to have to keep reading to find out!

After finishing this book, I'm going to chat about it with Sel because she has already read it. Joanne Harris is one of our favorite authors. Maybe you've heard of her book, "Chocolat", which was made into a movie?

Happy Reading, everyone!

I love this approach to promoting reading, particularly interesting for me as I also sell English books for children as a bit of a sideline, so that I have decent books for my little boy, despite living in Germany, so this would be an interesting project from the 'Usborn e Books' Perspective too.

Hi everyone,

From chilly Mar del Plata I´d like to recommend three books. One is ¨Tales from Shakespeare¨ by Charles and Mary Lamb. It contains 20 of Shakespeares´s most famous plays in prose. My favourites are ¨A Midsummer Night´s Dream¨, ¨Twelfth Night¨, ¨Romeo and Juliet¨ and ¨Hamlet´.
Another is H.C. Andrersen´s ¨The Emperor´s New Clothes¨. He is an author for all ages. Last but not least, Oscar Wilde´s ¨The Picture of Dorian Gray¨.

Cheers,

Monica

PS: ¨We read to know we are not alone¨ from the film ¨Shadow Land¨

Hi Monica,
Thanks for your book recommendations! What a coincidence-- I received an announcement that a performance of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" will be held on Kansai Gaidai's campus at 6 p.m. next Tuesday, May 22. I hope that some IES students will be able to attend!
