Sharing Cultural Information

turkish astronomerIn chapter four, the Turkish astronomer is introduced.  As you probably remember, he is the one who first discovered the Little Prince's planet, B-612.

"On making his discovery, the astronomer had presented it to the International Astronomical Congress, in a great demonstration.  But he was in Turkish costume, and so nobody would believe what he said.
Grown-ups are like that..."

The story goes on, and the Turkish astronomer presents his discovery again, and dresses in European clothing.  This time, his discovery was acknowledged.

In this passage, we might say that ignorance of other people and cultures can lead to grave consequences.   Perhaps if the scientific community mentioned here knew more about the Turkish astronomer's culture, this situation would not have happened.

Here in our class blog, we have an opportunity to interact with people who live in many countries.  Since we have this chance, I hope we can share information about our cultures, in hopes of creating more understanding, and ultimately peace.

Students, please share one aspect of Japanese culture with our readers from other countries.  Guests, in the future, I will ask you if you are interested in sharing  information, pictures, and blog posts about your cultures as well.

Students, we're looking forward to learning about Japan and Japanese culture from you!

I'm sorry to be late. In Japan, in January 7, Japanese people eat rice porridge. It is called‘NANAKUSAGAYU”. NANA means seven. So the rice porridge is included seven greens. Seven greens are Seri, Nazuna, Gogiyou, Hakobe, Hotokenoza, Suzuna, Suzushiro. Japanese people eat it to rest our stomach because we eat many foods in New Year's Day.

Hi, I'm Minami.
When we go through a red light, we sometimes say, "It is not scary if we go through a red light with everyone." This means that going through a red light is wrong but we can do it if there are other people. I think it shows our Japanese nature very well. Many Japanese are gutless. People can't do such trivial wrong alone.

Hi!! I'm Miho.
I heard many forigner get confused by our regional dialects!!There are tons of dialects in japan, like Tokyo people use normal beautiful Japanese i think, but we as we from Osaka speak Osaka-dialect, and it's totally different from Tokyo. We mainly use the same pharase, but our intonation is different. It's very hard for me to accept intonation of Tokyo people, because I don't get used to it.lol I like about our dialects. It's even very hard for japanese!! It's just fun to learn another pharase or intonation!! Yet,Many japanese wil speak English, so don't worry about it!! Please come see our country!!
